(b)He reminds them that the end of all things was at hand, and that it became them to be sober, and watch unto prayer, 1 Peter 4:7. God has a purpose for our lives. He ceased from sin on our behalf, not by renouncing His own sinful past for He was sinless (1 Pe 2:22), but by standing firm in the midst of temptation. In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1Th 5:18-note). For he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin. Second, the desire is to draw out a principle from Christ: he suffered  for sin once in the past (i.e., during his life on earth) with the result that he will never have to deal with sin again. ed. The important truth, then, taught by this passage is, “that the near approach, of the end of all things should make us serious and prayerful.”. The fact that he has been persecuted is an indication of another fact, namely, that he has ceased from sin.

The phrase, “the end of all things,” would naturally refer to the end of the world; the winding up of human affairs. Compare 1 Thessalonians 2:19. Simply put, by doing the will of God. Though Christ was always sinless (2:22; 2 Cor. See the notes at Romans 1:26-31.

If it was referring primarily to believers, it would not seem to fit since suffering does not make us “cease from sin.” Some believers in suffering actually fall farther away from God. The fact that it is such language as we now naturally address to people, saying that in respect to them “the end of all things is at hand,” shows that it cannot be demonstrated that Peter did not use it in the same sense, and consequently that it cannot be proved that he meant to teach that the end of the world was then soon to occur.
